Crypto indexes
without the noise

How to turn an entire market into one useful metric, preserve the details that matter, and tell sound methodology from a polished number.

not a single ticker.

01

An index is a rule,
not just a list of coins

A crypto index compresses the movement of a group of assets into a single number. But that number is only as useful as the rules behind it: which assets qualify, how weights are assigned, and when the composition is reviewed.

Think of it as a photograph of the market taken through a specific lens. A large-cap index captures the established core. A DeFi sector index follows one ecosystem. An equal-weighted index gives smaller components a much stronger voice.

A good index does not predict the market. It describes a chosen part of it honestly and reproducibly.
02

Anatomy of an index

1

Universe

The complete pool of assets eligible for selection.

2

Filters

Liquidity, trading history, custody, and data availability.

3

Weights

Market-cap weighted, equal weighted, or capped to limit dominance.

4

Rebalancing

The schedule for bringing composition and weights back in line with the rules.

03

Three ways to
allocate weight

The same assets can produce very different risk profiles depending on how they are weighted.

Market-cap weightedMarket leaders drive performance
Equal weightedEvery component matters equally
Capped weightingA compromise on concentration

Illustrative three-component model — not live market data.

04

A back-of-the-envelope calculation

Assume the index starts at 100 points. Three assets carry weights of 50%, 30%, and 20%. Over one day, they move by +4%, −2%, and +1%.

Δ Index0.50 × 4% + 0.30 × (−2%) + 0.20 × 1% = +1.6%New index value: 101.6

The index rose even though one component fell. That is the trade-off of compression: the result preserves the overall direction while hiding the dispersion underneath.

05

Where risk hides

01

Concentration

One large asset can turn “the market” into the movement of a single ticker.

02

Liquidity

A theoretical portfolio may be expensive—or impossible—to replicate in practice.

03

Data

Different venues produce different prices, volumes, and rules for handling outliers.

04

Rebalancing

Rebalance too often and turnover rises; wait too long and the composition becomes stale.

06

Five questions to ask
before trusting the number

  1. 01How is the eligible asset universe defined?
  2. 02Which liquidity and data-quality filters apply?
  3. 03How are weights assigned and capped?
  4. 04When do reviews and rebalances take place?
  5. 05Can the calculation be reproduced from public rules?
The takeaway

Do not look at the chart alone. The methodology is the product you are actually analyzing.
